25 bookish facts about me

Yes yes, I'd seen a Booktuber or two doing this, yes yes, it looked interesting yes yes let's cut to the chase =D

1. I love to jump into a book without knowing anything about it. It's always a pleasant surprise!

2. My most-read genre is Contemporary, and it's just like my safe zone when it comes to reading... I know, I should get out of it.

3. On the other hand, all kinds of Fantasy bore me. The kind with swords, the kind with monsters; but I recently read the first 2 books of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series and enjoyed them. It just takes luck to find a Fantasy book that I like.

4. I don't like to read in bed. Mainly because the most comfortable spot to read is too dim and my eyes are already as bad as they can get.

5. I find it easy to read through any noise. Be it in the bus, with all the people talking and the engines,  or at work, with my colleagues talking and laughing so damn loud xD

6. When it comes to music while reading, I let my playlist go on shuffle and my focus will only waver if a song that I'm currently loving comes.

7. Whenever I'm reading, I like to put the side of the page on the right between my thumb and forefinger and stroke the paper. It's so nice X_X

8. I hate not having all the books of the series before starting to read it.

9. What makes me a lucky person? The fact that I'm always finding entire trilogies in just one library by luck! In February, I've found the Delirium trilogy, the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, and the Burn for Burn trilogy, all in just one single library each xD

10. When I buy a series, I have to buy them in matching heights, covers, and spines. That's why I prefer buying them all at one shot =D

11. I am the only one in my family who reads. I find it weird to think that there are whole families (in books and real life) who like to read together??? It feels so awkward.

12. I've never bought books online before. Maybe because I don't know how to xD But mostly I just like to go to bookstores, you know?

13. I don't play favourites with authors because I always just read something because I want to, not because of the author =) I do have auto-buy authors though, but I don't call them "favourite authors".

14. I get annoyed when people who don't read at all post pictures of a book that is popular at that period. Aka I hate the local girls when they post pictures on their Instagram of If I Stay or The Fault In Our Stars just to make their feed more "Tumblr".

15. I can spend a long time in a bookstore if I am alone. I'll walk here, walk there, pick up a book, pick up another, put down a book, put down another.......

16. I've never read Harry Potter and used to have the mindset that I will NEVER read them.

17. My childhood wasn't Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, or Lemony Snicket. Instead it was all Enid Blyton and this series called the Boxcar Children.

18. I love to match books with songs. If you look carefully there's always that one song that seemed to have been made for that particular book.

19. I have membership for 3 of the major bookstores in Singapore, which are Popular, Times, and Kinokuniya. Of course, I don't need that membership for Popular anymore when I became a staff there, because staff discount =D

20. I still like physical books the best. Not ever gonna try e-books or audiobooks again, they're just not my thing.

21. The very first book that I reread a few times was Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami, and I don't even know why. In fact I bought it just because there was a cat on the cover.

22. I don't read books in my own language aka Malay. I'm not actually very good at it, speaking it only with my grandma and a few customers, and even then I still struggle /: English books it is.

23. I need to read a minimum of 100 pages a day if not I'll feel so unaccomplished =)

24. I try to avoid local authors, not that there are too many of them. I recently gave up on my dreams of becoming a writer and seeing accomplished ones in my own country makes me want to pick it up again, which I'm trying not to.

25. I have no idea who I'd be without this love for books.

Totally Should Have book tag

I haven't been doing book tags.
(maybe because I am still nobody in this book society so nobody has tagged me...)
But I've seen some Booktubers do this, so I've decided to jump in on the bandwagon too!
(even though nobody invited me...)

1. Totally should have gotten a sequel
Honestly, none of the solo books I've read should get a sequel. They're always perfect as a standalone!

2. Totally should have a spin off series
Because I always read contemporary.... I don't have many favourite series. I PROMISE I WILL READ LESS CONTEMPORARY THIS YEAR AND READ MORE OF OTHER GENRES!

3. An author who totally should write more books
Marissa Meyer! She's become an auto-buy author for me, and also: I need to read more fairytale retellings. I have a feeling she'd be the person who would write those ;)

4. A character who totally should have ended up with someone else
Lara Jean Song in PS I Still Love You, by Jenny Han. No spoilers! But boy was I pissed when I got to the end.

5. Totally should have ended differently
Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas should have ended with what exactly happened. /:

6. Totally should have a movie franchise
The Strange & Beautiful Sorrows Of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.
Any magical realism books, basically.
And also the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer.

7. Totally should have a TV show
Not TV show, but the Legend trilogy by Marie Lu would actually make a really great anime, in my opinion.

8. Totally should have had only one point of view
Maybe the last Mara Dyer book, but then again I didn't really like the series anyway so I don't think it'd have made a difference.

9. Totally should have a cover change
Just One Year by Gayle Forman. Yeah, that cover. Ugh. Need the silhouette cover like Just One Day please!

10. Totally should have kept the original covers
I don't think this counts, but the Ruby Red trilogy in paperback should have been in the same covers as the hardbacks /: I love the hardcovers!

11. Totally should have stopped at book one
Slammed by Colleen Hoover. I didn't see a need in it being stretched into a trilogy... In fact I don't see a need in contemporary novels being more than a standalone, in my opinion.

Books that would make great films/anime

I'm currently reading the Night Circus for the second time, and of course falling in love with it for the second time... especially a certain character. *cough*Celia Bowen*cough* 

Aside from that, I do agree with the Bookstagrammers that say this book would make a great movie. Yet at the same time.... I think it would make a better anime series. And then I started thinking of...

BOOKS THAT WOULD MAKE A GREAT 

FILM/ANIME SERIES

1. Night Circus / Erin Morgenstern

Night Circus is about, as you can see in the title. a circus that comes out only at night. Black and white striped tents filled with equally mysterious and good-looking illusionists, contortionists, magicians... 

A film adaptation of this book would be so pleasing for the eyes and mind. To be honest, any book set in the 1800's would make a good film. I can just imagine the hairstyles and the costumes; the mannerisms and the way the characters would speak. Also, the Murray twins always come into my head as anime characters somehow, so an anime series is my second thought :3 

2. The Strange & Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender / Leslye Walton

This one has beautiful writing and has so much potential to be a beautiful film, if given the right cast and made properly. BUT, being one of my favourite books of 2015, at the same time I do not want it to be made into a movie in case it gets ruined.

3. The Archived & The Unbound / Victoria Schwab

This series is, in one sentence, about the dead being kept in the Archive like books in a library, and a girl whose job as a Keeper is to make sure they stay locked. The whole time I was reading this duology this year, I thought of it as an anime series. Not sure why, but a good anime to me always consists of a mysterious otherworldly vibe. With ghosts. Yes.

4. The Lunar Chronicles / Marissa Meyer

When I was explaining the premise of this book series to one of my friends, he commented that it would be nice as an anime. Yes, he is correct. A mix of fairytales and Science fiction. Hmm.... if that doesn't sound like a good anime series I don't know what does. (Also Cinder would be so attractive as an anime character sigh)

5. The Mortal Instruments / Cassandra Clare

Surprise, surprise. Nope, I did't finish the series, and nope I didn't even enjoy the first 3 books that I got to read. But, it would make a really attractive and action-packed anime, one that would have my attention from start to finish. Also has the potential to be one of those long-running animes that everyone seems to watch and love, especially if there's the Infernal Devices trilogy added to the mix (; 

6. the Legend trilogy / Marie Lu

The only Dystopian series on the list. I wouldn't exactly say this would make a good movie franchise, because Hollywood might just ruin the series if you know what I mean... However it makes a nice anime series. It gave me the Code Geass and Gundam Seed vibes somehow, even though these books have no mecha involved. All that hoo-ha about war and the Republic, etc. And of course, the resemblance in my mind between June and Cagalli Yula Athha from Gundam Seed.

A popular book or series that you didn't like

THE MARA DYER TRILOGY. I have to caps this because I just DON'T UNDERSTAND THE HYPE AROUND NOAH SHAW AT ALL. He's just a creepy weirdo and I just don't get the romance between him and Mara Dyer.

A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love

We Were Liars. Yes, I love this. And yes, many people say they don't like it at all, they saw that coming, blah blah blah whatever, I love it.

A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with or an OTP that you don't like

I didn't really like Day and June from the Legend series being together. I much prefer Day and Tess, considering how they've been there for each other way before he met June. And also, I dislike romances that I just don't get at all. 

A popular book genre that you hardly reach for

Fantasy. It just isn't my thing. I can read ten contemporary novels straight in like 20 days, and still fall into a really bad reading slump if I touch a fantasy. Sorry to say.

A popular or beloved character that you do not like

Uh...... Noah freaking Shaw.

A popular author that you can't seem to get into

I'm not very picky about authors... I usually see more into the genre than the author, if that makes sense. 

A popular book trope that you're tired of seeing (examples "lost princess", corrupt ruler, love triangles, etc)

I hate seeing "The next Gone Girl" or "The next Hunger Games" on books because most of the time they're not similar at all.  

A popular series that you have no interest in reading.

Don't hate me for this, but........ Harry Potter. I have good reasons: they're best read while growing up; it's fantasy, which is a genre I don't usually enjoy; the fandom always shamelessly puts spoilers up everywhere on social media, which just kills the desire of reading it. 

The saying goes "The book is always better than the movie", but what movie or TV show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

I have a few answers to this: The Giver, If I Stay, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. But that's because I read the books after I watched the movies. It's better to watch the movie first and enjoy it as it is, and then pick up the book and love it even more, instead of loving the book wholeheartedly and then being disappointed by and hating the movie despite all the effort put into making it. 

No pictures for today because I am tired, as usual :) I haven't bought a single book this month, and I think that's a good thing!

Author you’ve read the most books from: 
If you count all the way from my childhood, it's no doubt Enid Blyton hehe. If not, it's actually Cassandra Clare, considering how I've read the Infernal Devices trilogy and the first three books from the Mortal Instruments.

Best sequel ever: 
My definition of 'sequel' is usually 'the second book', and that is no doubt Catching Fire, book two in the Hunger Games trilogy. It was just too darn good, and I flew through it in one day.

Currently reading:
Trying Night Film by Marisha Pessl again. Just fell into the peer pressure because almost all of Bookstagram and Goodreads are reading creepy books for this Halloween.

Drink of choice while reading: 
I usually don't drink or eat while reading, and vice versa. But at work, I love to buy chocolate milk tea from Gongcha to drink whilst eating my book ;)

E-reader or physical book: 
Definitely physical books. Not like I've ever tried E-books, but I can guarantee it's just not the same.

Fictional character you probably would have actually dated in high school:
I was a loser in secondary school (maybe still am) and my standards were kind of low, heh. I would have dated anybody that reeked of sweet talk and desperation.

Glad you gave this book a chance:
All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. At first I thought "meh, another suicide book" and I wasn't planning to buy it. Then my mom said she would buy me a book this one day, and I didn't see anything I liked and ended up picking ATBP randomly. My expectations were really nothing, but boy did that book surprise me. I ended up calling it my favourite book of 2015 so far :p

Hidden gem book:
The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants by Ann Brashares. I found this book at a used books store, hiding among other murky paperbacks. It was only $2.90, really yellow but still in readable condition. It really was a hidden gem, because I heard of this book in my childhood and never actually read it. The story was beautiful, the friendship was unbelievable, and all 4 characters were relatable in some way or another. The movie was made in early 2000's, but it was so good, making me laugh out loud at some points and crying at the end.

Important moment in your reading life: 
Seriously, I am forever grateful to that very moment I learnt how to read, and that very moment I discovered a love for books.

Love Fortunes & Other Disasters by Kimberly Karalius! This was so cute. My book review here!

Kinds of books you won’t read:
There are a few genres I really just don't enjoy, the major one being Fantasy, with swords or magic, stuff like that. I don't know, I tried, but it just isn't my thing.

Longest book you’ve read: 
Brave Story by Miyuki Miyabe. This one was more than 800 pages, which I took a week to read. It did help that I read it during the time I was suspended from class and had to sit at the office for the time being.

Major book hangover because of:
We Were Liars! I finished it last year at school during my lunch break, and the moment I closed it, I ran to the toilet and bawled my eyes out. And I may or may not still be having that hangover now.

Number of bookcases you own:
I only started seriously collecting books early last year, so I don't really have many bookcases. I just bought my current brown-black tall one last August-ish, but my collection is evergrowing so I may need another one soon!

One book you have read multiple times:
Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. I have no idea why, I don't remember what made me love this book so much. Knowing my 14-year-old self, it was probably because of the cat on the cover.

Preferred place to read:
I like to read in the library, any National Library here in Singapore. If not, I usually read at my desk in my room or at work during my dinnertime. As much as I love trains I do not enjoy reading on a train or bus ride because I prefer looking out the window instead :p

Reading regret:
I read mostly Adult Fiction during my secondary school years, which I really regret, because I could have watched how Young Adult fiction evolved had I gone for those instead. Also, I may or may not regret having not grown up on the Harry Potter series, but then again, my younger self just knew it wasn't my kind of thing.

I really need to start and finish on the Heroes of Olympus series! Rick Riordan is killing me with all his other new upcoming series.

Book-hoarding! Buying so many books at one go despite having so many at home that I need to complete. Then again, any true booknerd would have this problem :p

I almost bought We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach when I saw it discounted on Popular Online. I asked one of my best friends to buy it for me as I didn't have a credit card, but when I asked for her bank account number so I could transfer her the money, she refused to give it, and to take it as a belated birthday present!

I don't usually read books all night, mainly because I always sleep early :)

Books with memories

I just got back from my regular optician, and the degree in my right eye has increased dramatically! I guess that's what you get for reading while lying down, in dim lighting, without any breaks. What have I done to myself.

No matter, I've gotten a new pair of glasses for myself now. Took a while to pick out the perfect pair, and a while more for my eye check-up, but now all I have to do is collect them when they're ready, which may be some time next week. Can't wait! I don't mind laying it down low with the contact lens for now :)

So there's the Time and Place Book Tag all over Booktube now, which I've seen Ariel from ArielBissett do. I guess this one is somewhat similar, just that I renamed it to books with memories? Sort of?

In case you haven't noticed, I haven't been tagged to do any of these. I'm invisible to this society for now (I hope) so it's okay, I'll just flow along :)

For this tag, I'm going to pick out 5 books with strong memories attached to them. Unfortunately for me my stories won't go further than 2013, because I only started collecting books from then. Most of the books I read during secondary school days were from the library, and it's not like they had memorable attachments to them either, so... nevermind, let's get right into it.

1. The Language Of Flowers / Vanessa Diffenbaugh
If you know me now, you'd probably be aware that I am completely in love with MRTs. I love anything to do with trains, and I love staring at them whenever they pass by. I never get sick of it, and you'd think I was from a rural country, never having seen a train before.

Believe it or not, I wasn't very fond of taking MRTs back in the day. I didn't even know how to go Orchard, just because it was on the North South Line and I was from Pasir Ris, the East West Line. Anything beyond Paya Lebar was strange to me back then.

I got this book on my first ever solitary trip to the city in 2012. One of Popular's more high-class siblings still existed, {prologue} at Ion Orchard. It was also the time I didn't really read Young Adult, only reading Adult Fiction, so that was where I mostly browsed at.

This was also the book that got me obsessed with the Victorian Flower Language once. I read this in early 2013, which was the courting days with the love of my life, and I remember how I was always naming him flowers and their meanings randomly.

I also used to think the girl on the cover looked like me, because I had my hair covering one eye back then too. Oh the memories.

The leaf post-it says I read this book from 03/02/13 to 20/02/13. What I'd do to relive those days again.

2. We Were Liars / E. Lockhart

When I first saw this book, I wasn't really interested enough to buy it on the spot. There was water on the cover which turned me off because I have a strange fear of the blues. 

But when I saw it swirling around Booktube, I thought I'd give it a try. It was the Booksplosion Book of the Month for May or June last year, can't recall, so I decided to join in. I'm not sure where I heard it was a fantasy, but that was indeed what I thought it was... Only when I heard the Booktubers talking about it did I know it was a contemporary. 

We all have that habit of buying lots of books and never really starting on any of them until some time later, because we have so many others at home we need to read first. 

We Were Liars wasn't the case, because I started reading it the instant I got it. I read it down the escalators of Junction 8, at Bishan MRT station, even while walking towards Nanyang Poly. While people used their phones to avoid awkward moments while walking, I read my book. 

I read the first half at Nanyang Poly, (don't ask me why I was there... it's embarrassing) and finished it at Ngee Ann, my own school, during my 3-hours lunch break. I remember the emotional breakdown I went through that day... Yes, it's embarrassing. But it was also what made We Were Liars my favourite book of 2014.

3. The Evolution of Mara Dyer / Michelle Hodkin

This was the book that I'd brought along when I was admitted to hospital this June. I thought it could kill my boredom, but I didn't expect that there was no time to be bored at all. Nurses were checking my blood pressure and forcing me to eat every 15 minutes or so, and I was in more pain than I was bored.

So there the book sat, in my bag, gone unread my whole 3 days there. And it was quite ironic, considering how Mara Dyer herself went through a lot of shit at the hospitals like I did, up to the point where she developed a fear of needles. 

4. Grasshopper Jungle / Andrew Smith

This book is about a boy who is confused about his sexuality. While I didn't exactly love the plot and all, I thought the main character and his best friend reminded me of my two most favourite boys in the world: the love of my life, and his best friend.

Even though he's more of a bitch than any other girl out there, he's one of my very good friends too, and it was really entertaining to picture Austin and Robby as my boyfriend and best friend. I remember how I actually chuckled to myself while reading this, just because I had them in my mind the whole time.

5. Fangirl / Rainbow Rowell

Another hospital story attached to this one. I remember waking up to my dad telling me my mom had a fall at work and was going to the hospital. When I saw her, she said so forlornly, "I had a great fall..." and I couldn't help but think of Humpty Dumpty, which is what my dad secretly refers to my mom as. Needless to say I giggled during that serious situation.

I'd brought this book with me to kill my boredom, and it did wonders. Not many YA books focus on a college life, which was what Fangirl did. I read this while eating, while feeding the fish at the pond by the kopitiam, all under the roof of Changi General Hospital.

I guess that's it for now. I am going to try posting every night, though I may or may not be tired after a long day at work. I've been lucky for my first 4 posts because I had 2 days off and 2 days on MC, but we shall see ^_^

the Book Courtship tag

Now that the introductory post is out of the way, it's time to get onto the very first tag of this new blog of mine!

I saw this tag on Raeleen's channel, though majority who did it said they got it from Jesse's. Don't know if you know this, but padfootandprongs07 is my favourite Booktuber only because she reads more contemporaries than the rest, which is my most-read genre :)

Phase 1 – Initial Attraction: A book that you bought because of the cover.

So I was walking into Kinokuniya Jem, barely reaching the Young Adults section when I spot this book. It stood out so well and it was the first book, maybe the only book, I noticed.

I have this thing with butterflies, and this book was the only one on the shelves that had its cover out, the rest being just spines. It didn't just drew me in, it completely sucked me. Its title can only be seen when you hold it at a certain angle: Drop, by Katie Everson. "An honest account of a teenager's experiences with drugs", according to this blurb on the back.

Phase 2 – First Impressions: A book that you got because of the summary.

Here's a book I took for its summary, among the books which I took for their covers. 

Stumbled upon this book during the SG50 Warehouse Sale early last month. It was a lucky find, hiding among the $4 books, but going for just 2 bucks; Just Like Fate, by Cat Patrick and Suzanne Young. 

This summary reminded me of Kasie West's Pivot Point, which concept I found interesting. I may not have enjoyed it that much but it blew my mind to think about alternate universes and such. Also, any book that has a grandmother is sure to tear my heart apart, which is a great reason to bring a book home ;)

Phase 3 – Sweet Talk: A book with great writing. 

Not only is that cover gorgeous, but so is the writing of Leslye Walton's The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender. The way it was written didn't just captivate me but it also made me picture breathtaking scenes, as if I was really there, in that era and place.

This doesn't happen very often, being able to picture a clear setting of a book. But for this, it was easy simply because of the writing.

Phase 4 – First Date: A first book of a series which made you want to pick up the rest of the series. 

I picked up Cassandra Clare's Clockwork Angel the middle of last year, not expecting to like it. Books with werewolves, vampires, the such, weren't really my thing. [they still aren't.] But I fell for the first Infernal Devices book, hook line and sinker!

While everyone around Booktube and Bookstagram are obsessing over Will Herondale, there I was head over heels in love with Theresa Gray. I just love her strong humble demeanour, her love for books, and her grey eyes. Gosh. She's probably my first fictional girlfriend ever.

Phase 5 – Late Night Phone Calls: A book that kept you up all night. 

Honestly, I seldom read books late at night, because I cannot stay up alone anytime after 11 without music. And with music playing, I tend to lose focus on what I'm reading.

I've shamelessly joined in the trend of adult colouring books, and my current favourite late night activity is filling in Johanna Basford's Enchanted Forest with Taylor Swift's Red and 1989 albums playing in the background. [those 2 will always be my most favourite Swift eras!]

Phase 6 – Always on my mind: A book you couldn’t stop thinking about.

I finished this book at the airport, a few minutes shy of midnight. I could not stop sobbing, and it didn't help that the first song that shuffled on my playlist was Rihanna's Stay. It suited so perfectly with My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga. You'll know why if you read the book.

And even a few weeks after, I could not stop thinking about Aysel and Roman. )':

 Phase 7 – Getting Physical: A book which you love the way it feels.

I have this habit of fingering the corner of the page on the right side, like what you'd do before turning a page. I do this very often no matter what book, even after I just turned from the previous page, because I just love running my thumb along the paper. It feels really nice! Try it.

 Phase 8 – Meeting the parents: A book you would recommend to your family and friends. 

If I Stay by Gayle Forman was not a book I was expecting to like. I have this mindset of If people who don't usually read likes it, I won't. But I was wrong with this book. The movie made it a million times worse; I've watched it so many times and I still cry each time. Any book or movie that focuses on the relationship with parents and a little brother will always break my heart.

I know my family don't read, but I'd definitely want them to watch the movie adaptation.

Phase 9 – Thinking about the future: A book or series you know you will re-read many times in the future? 

I wasn't one of the fangirls who was anticipating Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games before the movies came out. In fact, I only read the books after I watched Catching Fire; and even then I hadn't even watched the first one yet.

I bought the boxset because I didn't know what was going on and needed the books to enlighten me, but I didn't expect to get hooked. Completely devoured the first 2 books, taking just a day each, along with two days for Mockingjay. They were easy reads, and in a way mirror the society we live in now. Would definitely reread this modern classic series in the future :)
